Why UK founders set up in Dubai
The UAE taxes company profits at 9%, and at 0% below AED 375,000. The UK charges 25% on profits over £250,000, closer to 26.5% in the marginal band. On personal income the UK takes up to 45%. The UAE takes nothing. That gap is why the question comes up.
A second reason is newer. On 6 April 2025 the UK scrapped the non-dom remittance basis, so long-term residents are now taxed on their worldwide income and gains. Founders who once kept foreign earnings offshore lost that option overnight, and many started looking at Dubai the same week.
The pull is real. The saving is not automatic. What you actually keep depends on how you structure the company and whether you become a UAE tax resident. Get that right before you register anything, because fixing it later costs far more than planning it now.
Still weighing up a Dubai move?
Talk it through with an adviser who knows the UK side before you commit to anything.
What does setting up in Dubai mean for a UK company?
A Dubai setup is two things: a UAE company and a trade licence for what you do. Everything else follows from those two choices.
You do not have to move. Some founders relocate and take a residency visa. Others run the company from the UK and visit when they need to. Both are common, and the routes below help you tell which one is you.
Get the licence activity and the structure right at the start and the rest is process. Get them wrong and you pay to unwind it later. So this is the decision to slow down on.
How the two systems compare
Is a Dubai setup right for you?
Before you pick a structure, check the move even fits. Dubai suits a lot of UK founders. It does not suit every one, and a good adviser tells you when to wait.
A strong fit if
You want 0% personal tax and will spend real time in the UAE.
You run an online or international business with clients outside Britain.
You want a UAE base to hold assets, property or group shares.
You are ready to meet the substance and residency rules properly.
Might not suit you yet if
You plan to stay UK-resident and keep strong UK ties.
You expect an offshore company to let you invoice UAE clients.
You want the tax win without spending days in the country.
Your trade is almost entirely inside the UK for now.
Sit mostly on the left? Then the next question is which structure. Sit on the right? Talk to us before you spend a penny, and we will tell you straight.
Which Dubai company structure fits you?
You have weighed the move. Now match it to a route. Each one below suits a different goal, so read for the card that sounds like your business, not all four.

How the Dubai setup process works
Most of it happens before you ever board a flight
Step 01 Same day
We learn your business and recommend the route, activity and jurisdiction that fit. No generic packages.
Step 02 1 to 2 days
We reserve your trade name and get initial approvals with the relevant authority.
Step 03 2 to 4 days
We prepare and file your licence documents and handle every government exchange for you.
Step 04 3 to 5 days
If you are relocating, we arrange your entry permit, medical and Emirates ID. If you are staying in the UK, we skip this.
Step 05 1 to 3 weeks
We open your corporate bank account, the step that trips most people up on their own.
Opening a UAE business bank account
Yes, a UK founder can open a UAE corporate account, but this is where do-it-yourself setups stall. Banks here vet hard, and a weak application gets a quiet rejection.
Banks we work with
Typical timelines
Banking note: bank approval is decided by the bank, not by us or by any consultant. Requirements, timelines and acceptance criteria change and vary by profile. RIZ & MONA Consultancy improves your odds and manages the process, but cannot guarantee any specific bank’s decision.
Do I stop paying UK tax straight away?
No, not by default. Setting up a Dubai company does not end your UK tax on its own. What ends it is genuinely changing where you are tax resident, and that takes more than a licence.
The UK decides your residency with the Statutory Residence Test. Spend 183 days or more in the UK and you are resident. But if you keep a home, family or work here, as few as 16 days can be enough with four or five UK ties. Many people who assume the 183-day line protects them are wrong.
A UAE Golden Visa is not the same as UAE tax residency either. The visa is the right to live here. Tax residency, and the certificate that lets you use the UK-UAE treaty, needs real presence, usually 183 days in the country over a rolling 12-month period.
So the structure and the days both matter. Get one wrong and the saving you moved for may not hold. This is exactly the planning RIZ & MONA Consultancy walks UK clients through before they file anything.
Visa and residency notice: visa eligibility, tax residency rules and treaty conditions are set by UAE and UK authorities and change over time. This page is general guidance, not tax or legal advice. RIZ & MONA Consultancy will assess your own residency position before you act.

UK tax and residency questions
The questions UK founders ask us most, answered straight. Tax rules change, so treat these as a starting point and get your own position checked before you act.
Do I still pay UK tax if I set up a company in Dubai?
Not automatically. If you stay a UK tax resident, HMRC can still tax profits you draw from a UAE company. Your UK tax only changes when you genuinely change your residency under the Statutory Residence Test, not when you register a company.
Can I move my existing UK limited company to Dubai?
No. A UK company cannot be re-registered in the UAE. Its country of incorporation is fixed. Instead you set up a new UAE entity and then decide whether to keep, dormant, or close the UK company, each with different HMRC effects.
Will HMRC treat my Dubai company as UK-based?
It can. Under Central Management and Control rules, if you run the company from the UK, HMRC may treat it as UK tax resident and tax its worldwide profits. Where real decisions are made matters as much as where the company is registered.
How many days can I spend in the UK after moving to Dubai?
It depends on your ties. The Statutory Residence Test counts both days and connections. With several UK ties, as few as 16 days can keep you resident. To break residency cleanly, most people aim for under 90 days and cut ties carefully.
Does a UAE residence visa make me a UAE tax resident?
No. The visa lets you live in the UAE. Tax residency, and the certificate needed to use the UK-UAE treaty, usually requires real presence of about 183 days in the country over a rolling 12 months. The two are separate.
Is free zone income really 0% corporate tax?
Only if it qualifies. A free zone company pays 0% on qualifying income as a Qualifying Free Zone Person. Income that does not qualify is taxed at 9%. The zero rate is real but conditional, so the activity and setup have to be right.
What is Small Business Relief and can I use it?
It lets a UAE company with revenue under AED 3 million elect for 0% taxable income. It is useful for early-stage founders, but it is set to end for tax periods after 31 December 2026, so it is a short window, not a permanent feature.
Does the UK-UAE tax treaty stop me being taxed twice?
The UK-UAE double taxation treaty has applied since December 2016 and helps in genuine dual-country cases. It does not let you escape UK tax while living and working in Britain. It works when there is a real cross-border position to resolve.
Setup, cost and banking questions
The practical side: what it costs, how long it takes, and what a UK founder actually has to show up for.
Can I set up a Dubai company without flying out?
Mostly, yes. Company registration and licensing can be done remotely from the UK. If you take a residency visa, you usually visit once for the medical and Emirates ID, typically three to five days. Without a visa, you may not need to travel at all.
How much does it cost to set up a company in Dubai?
For a free zone entity, expect roughly AED 18,000 to AED 34,000 depending on the zone, activity and visa count. Mainland varies more. Every quote depends on your setup, so RIZ & MONA Consultancy gives you a personalised figure rather than a headline price.
How long does the whole process take?
Licensing alone can take a few days to a couple of weeks. The full picture, including visa, Emirates ID and a working bank account, is realistically four to eight weeks. Regulated activities take longer, so it is wise to build in a buffer.
Do I need a UAE residence visa to run the company?
Not always. If you are relocating, the visa gives you residency, banking access and a route to tax residency. If you are staying in the UK and only holding or trading through the entity, you may not need one. It depends on your goals.
How hard is it to open a UAE business bank account?
It is the step that stalls most self-led setups. UAE banks vet hard and want real substance, a clear activity and clean documents. Accounts usually take two to six weeks. RIZ & MONA Consultancy matches you to the right bank and manages the file to approval.
Which structure is best for a UK founder?
There is no single best. Free zone suits online and international trade plus residency. Mainland suits selling inside the UAE. Offshore and holding suit assets, not trading. The right pick depends on where your customers are and whether you plan to relocate.
What happens to my UK company after I set up in Dubai?
You choose. Keep it trading, make it dormant, strike it off, or hold it as a subsidiary. Each route has different HMRC and reporting effects. This is worth planning with advice so the UK side and the UAE side line up cleanly.
